There is something incredibly special about cherry blossom season in Ontario. The soft pink blooms only last for a short period of time each year, making every moment feel fleeting and unforgettable. For Kevin and Sofiya’s surprise proposal at Gairloch Gardens, everything came together beautifully under the cherry blossom trees overlooking the lake.
Kevin had reached out to me before the proposal to carefully plan every detail of the surprise. He wanted the moment to feel natural, intimate, and completely unexpected for Sofiya while still capturing genuine emotion through photography.
Planning the Surprise Proposal at Gairloch Gardens
Kevin knew he wanted to propose to Sofiya beneath the cherry blossoms at Gairloch Gardens during peak bloom season. Since the cherry blossoms only bloom for a very limited time, timing was incredibly important when planning the proposal.
Together, we came up with a plan that would allow the moment to feel spontaneous and authentic.
The Surprise Proposal Plan
The idea was simple and natural. Kevin planned a picnic date for Sofiya at the park while I pretended to be a photographer building my portfolio nearby. Once I saw them walking near the cherry blossom trees, I would casually approach them and ask if I could take a few photos of them together for my portfolio, offering to send them the images afterward.
Thankfully, they agreed.
I began directing them into a few natural poses beneath the cherry blossoms while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and comfortable. At one point, I asked Sofiya to turn away from Kevin for a photo. As she turned around, Kevin got down on one knee and proposed.
The moment Sofiya turned back and realized what was happening was incredibly emotional and genuine.
Cherry Blossom Proposal Photography at Gairloch Gardens
Gairloch Gardens is such a beautiful location for surprise proposal photography, especially during cherry blossom season. The combination of lakeside views, blooming sakura trees, and quiet garden pathways creates a romantic atmosphere that feels cinematic and intimate.
The soft pink blossoms added such a dreamy feeling to the entire proposal, making the moment feel even more magical and emotional.
Sofiya’s Reaction After the Proposal
Sofiya was so happy and emotional after the proposal. Once the surprise settled in, the entire atmosphere shifted into excitement, laughter, and celebration.
After the proposal itself, we explored more of the park together and captured additional engagement style portraits beneath the cherry blossoms and around the waterfront. The spring colours throughout the park created such a soft and romantic backdrop for the photos.
Photos at the Picnic Setup
One of my favourite parts of the session was photographing Kevin and Sofiya at the picnic area Kevin had thoughtfully prepared beforehand. After the proposal, they were able to sit together, relax, and truly enjoy the moment together.
These quieter moments often become some of the most meaningful photographs because everything finally starts to feel real.
